Pacer Camp

Children’s Harbor, located on beautiful Lake Martin, is a non-profit organization which provides free counseling and support services to children with chronic illnesses and their families. Pacer Camp is sponsored, in part, by a grant from St Jude Medical as well as other pacemaker device companies and is specifically targeted to children with pacemakers or defibrillators. Pacer Camp has been ongoing for 10 years now, and allows children with these devices to meet other kids who also have a device. It shows the kids that they are not the only one who has one of these things, and that they are not all that different than other kids.

We had an opportunity to visit the kids at camp today, and as usual we brought along a few friends. Today was also the first outing for our newest rescue, Peanut who is a 14 year old Umbrella Cockatoo. Joining Peanut were Nitro, Sami and Turbo. The camp counsellors set aside about 30 minutes for us to introduce the parrots to the children and allow for some hands on time. For many of the kids this was the first time they have ever seen a big bird up close, and surely the first time to ever pet or hold one. Based on the smiles on their faces, it was a big hit!
